The Rat Race

The mad race to advance oneself economically has been termed the Rat Race. Does this sctually describe the mad dash to accumulate wealth and profits? Are we rats? I don't know much about rats but I do know one thing: they are very successful in colonizing the world. They proliferate very efficiently. This must mean that rats are able to share with other rats the bounty of this world. That would be a remarkable achievement, I believe. We do not hear of poor tats dying of hunger the way we see people on television dying of malnutrition. We do not see baby rats so emaciated they cannot even turn their eyes to the other side.

I would surmise that rats have a better way of sharing and distributing wealth. What can we say about human beings who are supposedly more intelligent and more sophisticated than rats? I cannot imagine Rat Philosophers or Rat Presidents or Rat Politicians talking about sucking it up and sacrificing for the good of the Rat Nation. One thing is obvious: rats do it better than us.

We have all the technology in the world, all the military hardware, all the productive resources capable of producing unlimited products, all the hawks and doves and bleeding hearts and hard-asses; and we have Poverty. I don't understand this. This doesn't make sense to me.
